Creation at Tangier from Research Center and Archives

on Judaism in Northern Morocco (continued)

At the end of a meeting which took place from September 19 to 21, 2022, participants from nearly ten countries proceeded to create the Center for Research and Archives on Judaism in Northern Morocco (CJNM). This seminar, which was held face-to-face and by videoconference, was organized on the initiative of the Council of the Jewish Community of Morocco, the Center for Judeo-Moroccan Culture (Brussels) and the Dr Aviad Moreno of Ben Gurion University (Bersheva), and brought together historians, academics and specialists in memory and the particularly rich history of Jews in the north of the Kingdom, residing in Morocco, Belgium, France, Israel, Venezuela, the United States, Brazil, Spain and Canada. Also participated in the seminar MM. Serge Berdugo, Paul Dahan, Driss El Yazami (CCME), Jamaa Baïda (Archives of Morocco), André Gomel and Mrs Zhor Rehihi. Mr. El Hassar Mostafa, Pasha of Tangier city honored the closing with his presence.

The meeting, supported by the Jewish Community of Tangier and the Donna and Haïm Benchimol Foundation, was an opportunity to visit emblematic places in the region – notably in Assilah, Larache and Tangier, witnesses of a millennial history of the descendants of the Jews of ‘Sephardic’ Andalusian dweller in northern Morocco, many of whom migrated to Latin America over the centuries.

It should be recalled that this meeting takes place a few weeks after the inauguration of the renovation of the Assayag synagogue and the opening of the “Beit Yehouda” museum space in the medina of Tangier, with the same objective of cultural rehabilitation. Judeo-Moroccan, and the preservation of this component of the memory of the northern region.

The CJNM will establish its headquarters at the office of the Jewish Community of Tangier, and will house a library and a place of residence dedicated to researchers. Its mission, among other things, will be to conduct scientific studies, in partnership with the Abdelmalek Essaâdi University, in collaboration with eminent Moroccan and international researchers, to better understand and present this community to the widest public, in Morocco and abroad, residents or visitors.
