OpenSignal study: Maroc Telecom ranked best mobile network operator

As we previously reported, Morocco has the best internet speed in the Maghreb according to a study by Cable.co.uk. Now it’s the turn of OpenSignal, an independent analysis company specializing in mobile network experience based in London, to focus on the best mobile network coverage in Morocco.

Based on data collected between 1er May and July 29, 2022, OpenSignal compared the three operators present in the Kingdom, namely Inwi, Maroc Telecom and Orange. In most of the performance segments analyzed, Maroc Telecom and Inwi are vying for first place, while Orange is following suit, according to the “Mobile Network Experience – Morocco” report, published this month of September.

According to OpenSignal, Maroc Telecom ranks first in six out of ten categories, namely video experience, download speed, export speed, 4G coverage, constant excellent quality and basic constant quality.

The results of the four other categories are tight, which makes Inwi and Maroc Telecom tied for first. Orange only has a place on the podium in one category: the availability of 4G.

This constant was calculated based on the proportion of time users have access to a mobile network. The three Moroccan operators are on the podium: 86.1% coverage time for Inwi, 86% for Maroc Telecom and 83.6% for Orange.

In detail, Maroc Telecom users enjoy an average download speed of 37.1 Megabytes per second (Mbps), 61.2 to 81.7% faster than that of Inwi (23 Mbps) and Orange ( 20.4Mbps). Along the same lines, Maroc Telecom’s export speed (9.7 Mbps) is 33.9 to 46.4% faster than that of its competitors (7.2 Mbps for Inwi and 6.6 Mbps for Orange).

Regarding the gaming experience and telecommunications applications, Maroc Telecom and Inwi are at the top of the ranking. Indeed, according to the report, users of both carriers reported excellent network quality experience while playing multiplayer games on their smartphones.

The conditions of the mobile network gaming experience are of good quality for Maroc Telecom users, which obtained a score of 55.1 points, the incumbent operator being closely followed by Inwi with 54.4 points. Orange remains far behind with only 47.9 points.

OpenSignal also measured, using a process inspired by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) approach, the quality of experience of telecommunications applications, such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Skype. In this sense, Inwi and Maroc Telecom are almost tied, with 75.6 and 75.7 points respectively. Orange follows its competitors closely with 73.4 points.

In order to quantify video quality, OpenSignal considered criteria such as technical parameters, image quality, video loading time, dropout rate, and viewers’ perceived video experience. users, on all types of resolutions. The results show that Maroc Telecom is far ahead of Inwi and Orange. Indeed, the incumbent operator obtains a score of 54.8 points, while Inwi totals 44.8 points, a score slightly higher than that of Orange (44.1 points).

For the first time, OpenSignal has added a category to its analysis that encompasses two awards: Excellent Quality Consistency and Basic Quality Consistency, both won by Maroc Telecom. This novelty, designed by Tutela, OpenSignal’s sister company, aims to assess user satisfaction, beyond the throughput criterion.

Six key performance indicators are taken into account, namely: average download speed, upload speed, latency, jitter, packet loss and time to first byte.
