Diplomatic circles accredited to Rabat welcomed ” surprise “ what they consider to be “an equally surprising cancellation, without convincing reasons”, by the Moroccan authorities, of two important meetings, and which concerned the visit on January 23 and 24, to Rabat of Olivier Lecointe, General Armament Engineer and Deputy Director for Africa and the Middle East at the Directorate General of (DGA) at the French Ministry of Defence, as well as the holding on 30 and 31 January of a meeting of the Joint Advisory Committee on Judicial Cooperation.
The same sources indicated that the French side does not seem convinced by the reasons given by Morocco to cancel these two meetings and which would concern “diary and logistical organization reasons”.
The visit of the French military official, the timing of which coincides with that begun in Paris on Monday January 23 by the Algerian Chief of Staff, Said Chengriha, could be akin to a consolation prize for Rabat.
These cancellations occur in a climate marked by several successive crises between France and Morocco, and aggravated by the activism of the Renew Group in the European Parliament, which gave rise to the vote, on January 19, of a resolution on the situation of journalists. Moroccans.
This situation is considered all the more critical as the Renew group is led by a certain Stéphane Séjourné, missi dominici of Emmanuel Macron in the European Parliament.
As a reminder, at the end of a joint plenary session which brought together the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors on Monday, Moroccan parliamentarians of all political tendencies put aside their ideological differences to unanimously condemn the text voted by their European counterparts and denounced, in this context, the activism of the Renew group.
